LEGAL STRUCTURE

BCLT is part of the University of East Anglia which has charitable status.

HISTORY

BCLT was founded in 1989 by the late W G "Max Sebald". The Centre works to promote literary translation as both creative writing and a professional activity, and as a source of international cultural exchange.

FINANCIAL SOURCES

BCLT's core funders are Arts Council England and the University of East Anglia. BCLT also receives grants from other funders, eg Culture 2000, for specific projects.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION

The offices of BCLT are situated in the University of East Anglia, a campus university in Norwich. As well as residencies, BCLT runs a Summer School, publishes two journals (New Books in German and In Other Words) and organises seminars, readings, conferences and other public events in London, Norwich and elsewhere.

LIBRARY

A small library with books, dictionaries, and specialist journals.
Residents also have access to the main university library from which they can borrow during their stay.

FACILITIES

Photocopying and 24 hour computer facilities available on the campus.

COST OF RESIDENCY / BURSARIES

Travel costs are reimbursed (up to a maximum of £400 GBP) and residents receive an allowance of £13 per day. No charge for flats.

ACTIVITIES

BCLT organises its own programme of seminars and workshops throughout the year. Residents can also participate in other seminars which are held in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. There are opportunities for translators to give seminars or hold workshops with students if they wish.

RECIT, The British Council, the Translators Association.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Residencies are for one month. There are normally a maximum of 4 residencies available per month.
Translators should normally have a contract for a literary translation project. Priority will be given to translators who have not had a residency at BCLT or another RECIT centre during the previous year. Translators must be citizens of the EU or one of the accession countries.
We accept all language combinations. However a knowledge of English is desirable to enable translators to gain the most benefit from theier stay.
Application: By application form, available in autumn 2004 for residencies in 2005.

OTHER REMARKS

BCLT is based at a campus university with an active community of students and faculty. It is ideal for translators who enjoy opportunities to engage with other professionals but it may not be so suitable for those who prefer a quiet and isolated location.
